What is Aromachology

Aromatherapy and the influence smells and scents have on our mental and physical well-being has been studied for centuries. Ancient civilizations knew the effect that fragrances could have on us without understanding the complex mechanisms in the body as a result of exposure to individual smells. Over the years we have uncovered the basic biological responses to smells and have begun to unearth the complexity of the brain’s responses to scents. In this article we’ll unwrap the science behind human behavior, emotions and feelings from smells.

What is Aromachology?

Aromachology is the study of the effect of smells on human behavior and how smells affect feelings and emotions¹. Aromachologists study the emotions brought on by odors that stimulate the olfactory pathways. Aromachology is defined as the scientific, data-driven, study of how smells provoke various psychological or physiological responses.

Although a relatively ‘new’ term, aromachology is an important science that has revolutionized commercial use of fragrances. The term (and the study) of aromachology was first assigned in 1989 to the study of scents and the psychological behavior as a result of odors. Aromachologists have conducted research and released their findings in various publications and aromachology books because of the indepth understanding that this science provides.

What is the Olfactory Bulb Function?

The olfactory bulb is responsible for olifaction. This is also known as the sense of smell, the sense through which odors are perceived. When a smell is released into the area in which a human is able to smell, the odor dissipates through the nose and activates the olfactory system.

Once an odor is observed it binds to receptors in the nasal cavity and travel through nerve endings to the brain. In the brain the olfactory bulb then analyzes the smells and sends the signals to various parts of the brain responsible for smell identification, memory, and emotion.

Essentially, this is the pathway that connects smell to the numerous feelings, emotions, and physiological reactions that can occur. Certain smells can be linked to a memory that can provide either a positive or negative association to a past occurrence. Nostalgia perfumery is the belief that perfumes have the ability to associate a smell to a positive memory.

Some smells can stimulate hunger and cause one to eat more or crave a certain food. Other fragrances have the ability to stimulate the nervous system and cause one to relax even when experiencing anxiety and stress.

What is the difference between Aromatherapy and Aromachology

What is the difference between Aromatherapy and Aromachology?

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic practice of smells for psychological and physiological response. Aromatherapy is an ancient practice dating back to Egyptian times whereby essential oils are used for mental and physical well-being. It is a holistic approach to the use of fragrance and scent to influence the mind and body. Aromachology on the contrary is based on science, research, and data.

As aromochology is a science driven by data and collective evidence there are several subsections that have resulted. Parallax Olfactory is an experiment of unorthodox scent concepts that have imaginative compositions. Aromachology has opened up the understanding of scent influence and given way to research studies and experiments.
